“An interior exile, the evacuation of Moselle from September 1939 to October 1940”, an exhibition at the Departmental Archives in Saint-Julien-lès-Metz
9 October to 7 May 2010
Between 1 September 1939 and 10 May 1940, 300,000 people from 300 towns in the "red zone" (from Bitche to Thionville, including Boulay) were forced out of their homes to avoid the German army's expected onslaught.
The massive, sudden evacuations brought them to several departments, including Charente, Vienne, Charente-inférieure, Nord, and the Loire. Seventy years later, the Moselle General Council wanted to remember the first episode in the forced exile of a large part of the department's population. That is why the departmental archives are presenting an exhibition about Moselle's main evacuations during the "phoney war" in autumn 1940. An exhibition catalogue, readings and performances at various sites in Moselle will echo those painful memories. 9 October 2009 to 7 May 2010 at the departmental archives in Saint-Julien-lès-Metz and 10 October 2009 to 31 January 2010 at the Sarreguemines media library. Free admission. Information: Service départemental d'Archives de la Moselle - 1, allée du Château - 57070 SAINT-JULIEN-LES-METZ Phone: 00 33 (0)3 87 78 05 00 - Website: www.archives57.com |
