The carnival, which is influenced by traditions from the Rhineland, takes place a week before Mardi Gras every year according to the same ritual, with the princely couple, Kappensitzung, grand Cavalcade and masked balls (Balla-Balla), and ends with the sentencing of the Prince on Ash Wednesday. The celebrating goes on all over town for 10 days.
